A very old and beautiful Padam by Swathi Thirunal, maharaja, patron of arts, great devotee of Vishnu, who created a bunch of bittersweet padams about a nayika, heroine, telling her grieves to sakhi, friend. Aparently, the maharaja enjoyed the idea of a young maiden intoxicantingly suffering separation from her lover, what is more, her lover is the Lord Himself - a strong bhakti touch to compositions. The nayika, tries to please her friend, saying how beautiful and exceptionally great she is, and meanwhile cries her heart out on her shoulder. the palette of emotions, ranging from an unbearable desire to despair and joyful sweet memories of being together with the Hero, makes the Padam more complex than it seems at first. When I was learning it, another teacher was wathching me and later resoluted that Sokha (sadness) is deffinitely my best enacted emotion. Who would doubt :/ ... haha

Wonderful padam. Lyrics and meaning are given with true fidelity. For a person of Russian descent you have done an excellent job in understanding the lyrics in Malayalam and the meaning for each word. Do you also dance?

ОтветитьУдалитьthank you! :) My teacher actually translated the padam for me and together we worked on the literate translation :) yes, I'm learning mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam in Kerala
УдалитьPlease read my article on this padam here

I must admit your translation is much more eloquent than mine :) thank you for sharing
УдалитьKudos to your effort in translating the krithis. We play the songs in endless loop for our baby girl to sleep and like it more everytime we hear it. I was looking at countless places to know the meaning but ended up with only lyrics. We appreciate your effort and knowing the meaning makes us appreciate the beauty of the song more. Would look forward to your translation of other krithis too. All the best to your dance too.
ОтветитьУдалитьThank you, Suresh! I'm very happy you found use to it, that makes me more motivated sharing the information online :) And wow, so great that you feed your child's ear with these divine compositions. my best wishes to you and your family!
УдалитьThanks Irena ! I wish our daughter grows into someone who can appreciate the music and dance of India and hopefully dance a padam one day on Poonthen nermozhi :) Her favorite!! :) Not that me or my wife know the dance form !!
УдалитьShe should and she definitely will! And, you know what, you don't have to know the dance form to appreciate it! I believe in our souls we are all dancers, that's why these dance/music items resonate so much within. It's also so great that you appreciate mohiniyattam so much, as because of its subtleness many people misunderstand it and find it not "showy" or "entertaining" enough. Pity, for its beauty is a meditative one...
УдалитьNo..my janu's shringaar is the best emotion...! And I miss those beautiful moments that I spent learning and dancing mohiniyattam with my janu!
ОтветитьУдалитьCorrect spelling for the rAgam is Ahiri (=aahiri) not Aahari. FYI

ОтветитьУдалитьI have to say... being a Malayali I'm kinda jealous. But i really appreciate your work.
ОтветитьУдалитьSuper work. Thank you for the English translation.
